In a victory for community action over Government incompetence, the community has been advised that the Point Hut Dog Exercise Area (PHDEA) will remain off-leash.

On Friday 6 June 2025, a Senior Director from the ACT Parks and Conservation Service informed residents that the PHDEA will remain off-leash.

Member for Brindabella Deborah Morris MLA said the decision was a victory for common-sense over senseless bureaucracy.

“The local residents have loved having this park off-leash for their dogs and is a strong part of the local community where owners can catch up and get a breath of fresh air as well,” Ms Morris said.

“Canberra desperately needs more areas like this and it made no sense why the Government even thought that introducing greater restrictions would be a good idea.

“This just shows how local community action can get government to change their decisions.

“While I have been proud to help represent the local community to force the government to change their mind, the victory belongs to all the local residents whose stories and support to keep the area off-leash was the real reason.

“This is just another example of how Canberrans can force the Government to overturn bad decisions that have occurred because of their failure to listen to the community.”
