The ACT Labor Government needs to quit the blame game and deliver the long-awaited Tuggeranong Ice Sports Facility.
In a joint motion in the Assembly tomorrow, Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation James Milligan and Liberal Members for Brindabella Deborah Morris and Mark Parton will call on the ACT Government to deliver on their decade-old promise to build the Tuggeranong Ice Sports Facility.
“For nearly 10 years Andrew Barr has promised to build an ice rink in Tuggeranong, but construction hasn’t even started,” said James Milligan, ACT Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation said.
“This facility would be a key piece of sporting infrastructure that would encourage participation, accessibility and develop a professional pathway for Ice Sport sin the ACT. The community has been eagerly waiting for the government to deliver on this commitment since 2016.
“The ACT should be the Ice Sports capital of Australia, and the community are keen to make that happen, but they have once again been let down by this government.
“The ACT Government continue to promise new major projects but fail to deliver for Canberra. How can we trust the government to deliver on any budget announcements from this week when we are still waiting for them to deliver on decade-old commitments?” Mr Milligan said.
Liberal Member for Brindabella Deborah Morris said it is time Labor quit the blame, rolled up their sleeves and got on with the job of delivering for the people of Tuggeranong.
“The Chief Minister and Sports Minister need to spend less time blaming others for their own failure to deliver a decade-old election promise,” Mrs Morris said.
“For three elections running, ACT Labor has taken a promise to the people of Tuggeranong. Almost ten years later, all the government has to show for it is a deteriorating relationship with the developer.
“They keep blaming the developer for dragging the chain, but after I questioned the Sports Minister, the ACT Government has confirmed they haven’t even drafted up a contract for the project yet.
“Now that Labor’s con job on the people of Tuggeranong has been exposed, they need to quit the blame game and just get on with it. Tuggeranong residents have waited long enough,” Mrs Morris said.
Member for Brindabella Mark Parton MLA said “The people of the Valley are sick to death of hollow Labor promises that are very rarely fulfilled. You kind of get used to being a second class citizen if you live in Tuggeranong, but it doesn’t make it any easier”
Mr Milligan and Mrs Morris’ motion calls on the ACT Government to:
Finalise the contract with the developer by July 2025;
Release the land valuation for the allocated site on Rowland Crescent in Greenway; and
Provide quarterly reports on the progress of the Tuggeranong Ice Sports Facility.
